Dr. Mutasim Nimir

Born in 1945 in Halfayat El Mulok, Mutasim Bashir Nimir is known as one of the Sudanese Environmental pioneers who dedicated a lifetime to environmental conservation. Dr. Nimir received his B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Khartoum in 1968. He completed his M.Sc. in Range Management at Montana State University in 1974 and received his Ph.D. in Wildlife Management from Colorado State University in 1983.

Jobs & Positions Occupied

Mutasim Nimir is one of the co-founders of the Sudanese Environment Conservation Society (SECS); the oldest environmental NGOs in Sudan that was established in 1975. Nimir occupied a number of environmental positions at different governmental and nongovernmental institutions. He was the president of SECS from 1985-1986, 1998-2000 and 2015-2017. He held the positions of director at Khartoum Zoo and at the Wildlife Research Center from 1985-1991. He was a national project manager for a number of projects under the Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources. He worked as a consultant for several international agencies and was an active member in over 15 national environmental committees.

Teaching Experience

Mutasim Nimir devoted considerable time to teaching; as he taught different environmental courses at various academic institutions including the University of Khartoum, University of Juba, Ahfad University for Women, University of Bakht al ruda and UNESCO’s Population Education Program. Dr. Nimir also contributed to the development of environmental curricula for different universities and supervised many research projects. He has over 45 published and unpublished papers.

International Experience

The experience of Mutasim Nimir is not limited to Sudan only; he worked as a consultant with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development to develop a study on wildlife utilization for Zimbabwe. He also worked with the Federal Environmental Agency in the United Arab Emirates in preparation of a strategy for protected areas. He had also been a member of the advisory committee of the African Protected Areas Initiative APAI-IUCN in Nairobi, Kenya for several years.

A Leave on the Earth Day

On the 22nd of April, 2017, Mutasim Bashir Nimir passed away in a car accident on a mission to the Dinder National Park with an Ethiopian team as part of a project to strengthen trans boundary cooperation between the two adjacent parks; Dinder and Alatish National Parks.
